With respect and gratitude, we remember Thor Lundh (1935–2026), founder of Lundhs.

Thor was more than just the driving force behind Lundhs; he was a true family man and a visionary stoneworker who left his mark both on our lives and out in the world. His commitment touched us all, and his warm presence made the workplace a place where everyone felt seen and appreciated.

Thor grew up surrounded by the sound of stone and the stories of generations before him – quarrying ran in his blood. When he took the courageous step in 1962 to start Lundhs Labradoreksport, it was not just a business idea but a heartfelt project. The early years were challenging, but his unwavering determination and faith in those around him enabled Lundhs to grow into a significant player in the production of Larvikite.

We remember especially Thor’s ability to build relationships. The export began with stone blocks to Belgium, and soon Thor was on a first-name basis with people in markets around the world.

His efforts mean that Larvikite from Lundhs now adorns several renowned buildings worldwide: Bloomingdale’s in New York, Galeries Lafayette in Paris, the reception at Hotel W in New York, Burj Al Khalifa in Dubai, and Sommerro Hotel in Oslo.

But for us, it is not just about the stone – it is about the sense of community Thor created, and above all, the pride we feel when we see our stone out in the world.

Thor had a particularly warm heart for art and the people who create it. His close friendships with, among others, Knut Wold, Darrell Petit, Harald Sverdrup, Knut Steen, Martin Kuhn and Makoto Fujiwara, and not least the establishment of Symposium Norway, stand as strong evidence of his willingness to open doors and give international artists the chance to work with Larvikite.

Thor inspired us to think differently and always seek better solutions – not just for the company, but for future generations. The uses for natural stone have changed, and the ways of extracting the stone have been renewed, much thanks to Thor’s drive and curiosity. Those of us who had the privilege of working with him know that this legacy will live on in everything we do.

We remember Thor with deep gratitude for all he gave us - not only as a founder, but as a person. Our warmest thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
