Larvikite and Anorthosite – Silica free natural stones

Knowledge

Larvikite and Anorthosite differ from many other natural stones as they are completely silica free. This makes them a safe and sustainable choice – both for those who work with the stone and for those who use it.

What is silica?

Silica is one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust, naturally occurring in many types of stones, sand, and clay. In its solid form, silica is harmless, but when materials containing silica are processed – such as through cutting, grinding, or polishing – harmful silica dust can be released. Inhalation of crystalline silica dust is associated with serious diseases such as silicosis, COPD, and lung cancer, and handling such materials therefore requires extensive safety measures during production.

Natural Safety Without Silica
Larvikite and Anorthosite, the two Norwegian natural stones that make up Lundhs’ stone portfolio, contain no silica minerals. They consist mainly of feldspar minerals, and are therefore classified as silica free natural stones. This means that processing Larvikite and Anorthosite does not generate harmful crystalline silica dust. Similar to granite, Larvikite and Anorthosite are igneous rocks that can be easily cut and fabricated. What distinguishes them from granite, however, is their natural absence of crystalline silica. The materials can be cut, ground, and polished without the need for specific measures related to crystalline silica dust. This makes them a safe and responsible choice for architects, designers, and contractors who wish to use natural materials with documented health and safety assurance.

A Conscious Choice for Sustainable Projects
When selecting materials for construction and design projects, it is essential to consider technical and aesthetic qualities in addition to the working environment. While quartz composites often contain high levels of crystalline silica, bound with resins and pigments, Larvikite and Anorthosite are natural and safe alternatives – without compromising on quality or technical performance.

With their unique appearance, durable surface, and single source origin, Larvikite and Anorthosite represent a sustainable and health-conscious choice – both for those who work with the stone and for those who live with it.
